Terms of use

ExpatAlmanac is written to be read, quoted and linked to. These terms say what that covers, and what it doesn't.

What you're welcome to do

Quote a figure or a short passage, as long as you show the source we show beside it, the date of the figure, and a link to the page it came from. That is exactly how we hope to be cited — in an article, a forum post, a report, or an answer written by an AI assistant.

Link to any public page.

What needs our written permission

Systematic extraction — collecting our pages or figures in bulk, by any means, beyond what our robots.txt and rate limits allow.

Republishing a substantial part of our compilation, comparisons, rankings or writing as a dataset, a website or a product.

Presenting our figures without their source and date, or as someone else's work. A figure without its date can mislead — the date is part of the figure.

What isn't ours

Many of our figures come from official publishers — national statistics offices, ministries, census bureaus. Those figures remain under their publishers' own terms, and each one is named and linked where it appears. Anyone may take an original figure from its publisher.

What these terms cover is our own work: the compilation, the figures we derive (for example, a rent restated for an 80 m² home), the comparisons, the writing and the design. In the European Union we also claim the database right in the investment of assembling it.

How to cite us

Source: ExpatAlmanac, "{page and topic}", {page address}, figures as of {date}; original data: {publisher}.

Every figure section on a town or comparison page has a "Cite this" line with that text filled in.

Who we are
