Healthcare when you retire and move

Medicare moves with you between US states but not abroad, and a provincial plan stops at its absence limit. What changes with each move, and which guide answers it.

The question most people arrive with

It depends on where you move. Original Medicare covers any doctor or hospital that takes Medicare anywhere in the U.S., so a move between states changes which plans you can buy, not whether you are covered. Outside the United States, Medicare usually pays nothing, and a Canadian provincial plan pays only what it would have paid at home, and only while you are temporarily away. A move abroad therefore means arranging coverage in the new country.

Who this page is for: retirees from the United States or Canada working out what happens to their health coverage when they move — to another US state, or to another country. Every rule below comes from the government that sets it, and each guide linked here carries the detail and its sources.

The coverage question changes with the kind of move. A move between US states keeps Medicare and changes the plans on offer. A move abroad leaves Medicare, or a provincial plan, mostly behind, so the question becomes what covers you in the new country.

Moving to another US state with Medicare

Original Medicare is the same in every state: "You can use any doctor or hospital that takes Medicare, anywhere in the U.S." [1] Medicare Advantage is different, because a plan may require you to use "doctors and other providers who are in the plan's network and service area (for non-emergency care)" [1]. Moving out of an Advantage or drug plan's service area opens a Special Enrollment Period to choose a plan where you now live [2].

The guide Medicare when you retire to another state sets out the timing, the Medigap rights a move can give you, and where to get free help. What Medicare costs in each place is on its state and county pages, starting from the United States overview.

Moving abroad with Medicare

Medicare stops, in most cases, at the US border. Medicare.gov's own wording on care outside the U.S. is that "You pay all of the costs, in most cases" [3], and its few exceptions involve being in, or living in, the United States. The decision Medicare leaves you with is whether to keep paying for coverage you cannot use where you live. Does Medicare cover you in Mexico? works through that decision for Mexico; most of what it sets out — the exceptions and the Part B decision — is Medicare's own rule, not Mexico's.

Moving abroad from Canada

A Canadian provincial plan pays, for care outside Canada, what it would have paid at home: the Canada Health Act requires "the amount that would have been paid by the province for similar services rendered in the province" [4]. It applies while you are temporarily absent from your province, which someone who has moved is not. Does your provincial health plan cover you in Mexico? gives each province's rules and limits.

Healthcare in the country you move to

Coverage in a new country depends on that country's own system, so it is answered country by country.

Guides for more countries are added as they are written; the list at the top of this page is always the current set.

What this section does not do

  • It does not recommend a plan, an insurer or a policy, and it links to no broker or plan-sales site.
  • It does not estimate what medical care will cost you: that depends on your health, and no figure here pretends otherwise.
  • It does not give medical advice. It shows the published rules and their sources, so the questions you ask your plan, your insurer or your doctor are the right ones.

Frequently asked questions

Does Medicare still cover me if I move to another state?

Yes. Under Original Medicare you can use any doctor or hospital that takes Medicare, anywhere in the U.S., so it is the same in every state. A Medicare Advantage plan is tied to its network and service area, and moving out of that area opens a Special Enrollment Period to choose a plan where you now live. Does Medicare cover me if I retire abroad?

In most cases, no. Medicare usually does not cover health care outside the U.S.; its own wording is that you pay all of the costs, in most cases. Its few exceptions involve being in, or living in, the United States. Source: Medicare.gov, checked 2026-10-23

Does my Canadian provincial plan cover me if I retire abroad?

Only in a limited way, and not once you have moved. The Canada Health Act requires a province to pay, for services outside Canada, the amount it would have paid at home, and that applies while you are temporarily absent from your province.
