Every figure sourced and dated

Put them side by side.

For retirees with a shortlist: put up to six towns side by side, in one country or across several, on cost, safety, healthcare and climate. Where two figures cannot honestly meet, the cell says so instead of showing a number.

Pick 2 to 6 places. Open a country to see every town we cover there.

Why some cells are empty

An empty cell means one of two different things, and the table says which. No data means we hold nothing yet and will when the research is done. Refused means we hold both figures and they cannot honestly meet — different registries counting different things — so putting them in one row would show you a difference that is partly just bookkeeping. We would rather show you nothing than that.

Why each town shows one rent figure — and says which

An observed asking price and a census median are not the same measurement. One is what landlords are listing this month; the other is what tenants across a whole area actually pay, including people who signed years ago. Averaging them would produce a number no reader could check, so each town shows one: the asking rent where we have it, else the rent tenants pay. The figure names its method, and every other rent we hold for that town is one tap away under "Which figure", with its own source and date.
